The Angel at Oakdale Cemetery
After the publication of Thomas Wolfe's "Look Homeward, Angel" in 1929, a local historian, Sadie Patton suspected that the angel in the Oakdale Cemetery was the same to which the author constantly referred.
Her research developed that W.O. Wolfe (father of the Thomas Wolfe) and the "Oliver Grant" of the novel had placed the Angel in Oakdale there.
This angel marks the burial space for the Reverend H.F. Johnson Family. After the burial of Mrs. Johnson, her daughters and daughter-in-law bought the angel from Mr. Wolfe who erected it in Oakdale.
